Resolution On Use of the GRE
Date
Background
The GRE was created almost 90 years ago and has been widely used in graduate admissions. Many graduate programs, both at Rutgers and nationally, no longer use the GRE. Other programs rely heavily on the GRE, particularly the Subject Test. It is reasonable to believe that graduate programs are the best judges of what information they need to make informed admissions decisions. If a graduate program requires the GRE, notwithstanding its $205 cost to the applicant and its possible bias, the program is judging that the GRE is providing vital information.
Therefore, be it resolved that the NBFC recommends that decisions about the use of the GRE in graduate admissions be made entirely by each graduate program.
