Resolution on Library Allocations

Date

Whereas, issues that the University Librarian and her staff are compelled to deal with during the transition associated with the introduction of the new online electronic resources and the cancellation of certain print materials are complex and require ongoing collegial and open dialog with faculty and administrators; and

Whereas, facilitating interactions among librarians, faculty and administrators will enhance decisions required to maintain existing print collections while introducing online electronics resources,

Therefore, be it resolved that the New Brunswick Faculty Council recommends and strongly endorses:

1. That all academic units appoint faculty to identify and interact with librarians assigned to their schools and departments in order to communicate specific needs and be informed, in a timely manner, of plans and decisions being made that affect their access to print and online resources at Rutgers University. In the same spirit, ask librarians to identify liaison persons within academic units they are assigned to, and develop mechanisms to keep faculty informed of new resources being introduced, or of imminent cancellations of materials being made, that impinge on scholarly activities of the university community.

2. The establishment of a Standing System-wide Library Committee composed of faculty, representatives elected by faculty councils and the university senate, librarians, and administrators that will provide continuity of advice on a broad range of issues such as: collections, buildings, digital projects, new services, policies and budgeting. A major charge for this committee is to foster achievement of the long-range strategic plan of the library within the context of University priorities.
