Resolution on the Faculty Role in Undergraduate Admissions and Recruitment
Date
Be it resolved that the New Brunswick Faculty Council endorses the following recommendations:
1. The Undergraduate Admissions Office should annually report to college Admissions and Scholastic Standing committees on how well current admissions criteria weighting correlated with first-year grades, as determined by validity studies, on how well current admissions goals were met, and on how they propose to set the college's goal for the next admissions cycle. They should invite college committees to suggest revision of the weighting of admissions criteria.
2. Departments should have web pages explaining their major to prospective students, including not only academic details but suggestions as to what careers it prepares them for. These should be reachable by multiple pathways from the university web site. Admissions should inform departments of applicants (with e-mail addresses) interested in a particular major; faculty could send standard e-mail messages to these applicants inviting further queries.
3. Faculty are encouraged to participate in on-campus events for prospective students, both before they apply and after they are accepted. Faculty who are willing can be useful in contacting the best admitted students to persuade them to come to Rutgers.
