Resolution on the Use of Teaching Evaluations

Be it resolved that the New Brunswick Faculty Council endorses the following recommendations:
1. Department Chairs should keep a copy of the summary statistics sheet generated from student rating forms for each faculty member.
2. Summary sheets should be retained in department files.
3. Department chairs should provide faculty members with a copy of the summary statistical sheet for his or her courses and provide the faculty member with the original forms or a copy of these forms.
4. Instructions for soliciting comments should be developed and become part of the Teaching Excellence Center's instructions that accompany student rating forms.
5. Department chairs should permit faculty members who wish to do so to include a brief written response to the student ratings in a class. Written responses by faculty members should be available to any peer review committee and a notation be made on appropriate university promotion forms that such responses are available.
6. Academic deans should be asked to actively support the implementation of these recommendations.
