A letter from a student representative

Dear Members of the Faculty:

A week ago, I presented the student response to the proposed budget cuts slated to affect Rutgers in the coming fiscal year to the New Brunswick Faculty Council. These are desperate times that require a very strong response from those who will suffer most from these cuts. The students of Rutgers in a collective effort with all of the campuses and colleges have crafted that response.

We have launched a web site , which is the base of operations for our collective cause.

As I explained a week ago, this effort has three prongs:

  1. A statewide petition that you can sign on the web site. Once the petition is signed, a letter is sent on your behalf to all the members of the State Senate and Assembly Budget committees;
  2. A "Tell Us Your Story" campaign, which presents stories of Faculty, Staff and Students. These stories will be bound together and sent to the legislature as a whole;
  3. Finally, where your support is needed most, a rally is planned for April 27, 2006, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. Busses are slated to leave the respective Rutgers campuses at 9:45 a.m.

I am writing this letter to ask for your support in signing the petition and attending the rally. Also, please share this information with as many of your colleagues as possible. Though Rutgers is taking the lead in this effort, it is intended to be a statewide response. Many of your students will be attending this rally, and it would be greatly appreciated if you encouraged those who are not already signed up to attend the rally or at least sign the petition.

We encourage all members of the faculty to allow students some leeway with attendance of the event. Perhaps professors could offer ?extra credit? or an excused absence for attendance of the rally? Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from many of you through the web site. I hope to see your voices join ours by signing the petition in support of higher education. I also hope to see many of you in Trenton in a few weeks. You can reserve your spots on the busses today at our web site. Please indicate that you are a member of the faculty.

If you would like more information about the exact nature of the effort, feel free to contact me at 551-206-8647 or via e-mail .

Sincerely,

Sharo M. Atmeh
